When would you actually use this?

You have a £120 budget, items cost £15 each and there is a fixed delivery charge of £30. How many can you buy? That's a linear equation: 15x + 30 = 120. Equations let you work backwards from a known result to an unknown quantity.

Worked example

"A mobile contract charges £12 per month plus a £40 handset fee. After how many months will the total reach £184?"

12x + 40 = 184

12x = 184 − 40 = 144

x = 144 ÷ 12 = 12 months

Always check: 12 × 12 + 40 = 144 + 40 = 184 ✓
