Number Names Explained
Core concepts, classroom applications, and plain-English explanations for all audiences.
Where number names matter in real life
Banks still require cheques to be written in words — "One hundred and forty-two pounds" — precisely because words are harder to alter than digits. Legal documents use word-form numbers for the same reason. And when the news reports "£2 trillion national debt" or "8.1 billion people on Earth", understanding these names helps you grasp the actual scale.
Worked example
"Write 4,580,000 in words and in scientific notation."
Groups: 4 million, 580 thousand
Words: four million, five hundred and eighty thousand
Scientific: 4.58 × 10⁶
Result: four million five hundred and eighty thousand
The UK billion = 1,000,000,000 (the US definition, now standard everywhere).
Common mistakes
- ✗ Confusing billion and trillion: A billion is 1,000 million. A trillion is 1,000 billion. The national debt is trillions; a large salary is millions — very different scales.
The old UK "billion" was different
Before the 1970s, the UK used "billion" to mean a million million (10¹²). Now it means a thousand million (10⁹), matching the US. Old British texts may use the old definition.
Understanding Large Numbers: Western vs. Indian Systems
Our Number Names tool helps you make sense of large numbers by converting them into their written forms. Simply type in any number, and you'll see it named according to both the Western (million, billion, trillion) and Indian (lakh, crore, arab) numbering systems.
This resource also provides scientific notation and a clearly formatted display, making it easier to grasp the scale of numbers that often feel abstract. Whether you're dealing with global statistics or financial figures, understanding these different naming conventions is crucial.
Common mistakes to avoid
- A billion in the UK is a million million:Historically, the UK (and other European countries) used the 'long scale' where a billion was 10^12 (a million million). The US used the 'short scale' where a billion is 10^9 (a thousand million). Today, the UK officially uses the 'short scale' system, so a billion is 1,000 million (10^9), aligning with the US system and global financial standards.
- A crore is roughly equivalent to a million:While both are large numbers, a crore is 100 lakhs, which translates to 10 million. A million is 10 lakhs. A crore is 10,000,000 (ten million). A million is 1,000,000 (ten lakhs).
- Lakh is a universal term for a hundred thousand:The term 'lakh' (or 'lac') is primarily used in the Indian subcontinent and some other South Asian countries. It's not commonly understood or used in Western countries. In Western countries, 100,000 is simply referred to as 'one hundred thousand'.
- A million and a billion are just 'very big numbers' and are roughly similar in scale:The human mind struggles to grasp the vast difference between powers of ten. A billion is 1,000 times larger than a million. To put it in perspective: if you earned £1 every second, it would take you about 11.5 days to earn a million pounds, but over 31 years to earn a billion pounds.
