Where you already use this
A cricket batting average divides total runs by dismissals — the result is a decimal (e.g. 52.4). A probability of "3 in 8 chance" is ⅜ = 0.375. Splitting £1 equally among 3 people gives you 0.333...p each — and now you know why the pennies don't quite add up. Converting a fraction to a decimal is just performing the division hidden in the fraction bar.
Worked example
"Convert 3/8 to a decimal."
Step 1: Simplify & set up 3 ÷ 8
Step 2: 8 = 2³ (only prime factors of 2) → Terminates
Step 3: 30 ÷ 8 = 3 remainder 6 → 0.3
Step 4: 60 ÷ 8 = 7 remainder 4 → 0.37
Step 5: 40 ÷ 8 = 5 remainder 0 → 0.375
Result: 3/8 = 0.375
3/8 terminates because 8 = 2³ — only a factor of 2.
Common mistake to avoid
- ✗ Dividing denominator by numerator: 3/8 means "3 divided by 8" — not "8 divided by 3". The numerator (top) is the dividend and goes inside the division bracket.
