A clever trick for every times table

Why times tables are the foundation of maths

Speed in everything

Times tables underpin long multiplication, division, fractions, percentages and algebra. Fluency means less working memory needed for harder problems.

Pattern recognition

Each table has its own rhythm — the 9s digit trick, the 5s ending rule, the 11s symmetry. Spotting patterns is a core mathematical skill.

KS2 & secondary school requirement

The UK national curriculum expects fluency up to 12×12 by age 9 (Year 4). The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) tests all tables under time pressure.
